Lloyd’s Register has granted approval in principle to HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering’s VesselWise system ahead of planned testing aboard a 174,000 cu m LNG carrier.
VesselWise’s autonomous auxiliary machinery optimisation function uses automation and artificial intelligence to adjust the operation of onboard support systems rather than limiting its role to monitoring equipment and advising crews.
The technology forms a core application within HD KSOE’s Integrated Smartship Solution platform. LR assessed the concept against the safety, performance and cybersecurity requirements in its ShipRight Digital Ships framework.
The approval validates the system’s technical basis but does not constitute certification for commercial deployment. HD KSOE will now move towards shipboard verification.
The company has not identified the LNG carrier, its owner or the machinery systems included in the initial installation.
HD Hyundai completed the second generation of its Integrated Smartship Solution in 2024. ISS 2.0 added cloud connectivity, trim and route optimisation, container-loss prevention and camera-based emergency detection.
That platform was previously piloted aboard an 8,000 teu Sinokor Merchant Marine containership and received separate approval from Korean Register.
