Carrier Connect looks to acquire Rochester Colo, take over New York data center

Canadian data center firm Carrier Connect is set to acquire New York data center firm, Rochester Colo.

The company this week announced that it has signed a non-binding letter of intent (LOI) with Rochester Colo LLC to acquire the principal operating assets of Rochester Colo’s data center business located in Rochester, New York.

Terms were not shared, but the deal would be paid for via a mixture of cash and shares in Carrier. A Definitive agreement is due to be finalized by June 15.

Carrier said the deal would give the company an “immediate operating foothold in the US.”

“No matter how digital the world becomes, infrastructure still matters – location, reliability, and trusted customer relationships matter,” said Carrier CEO Mark Binns. “Rochester Colo would give us a meaningful entry point into the US market through an operating asset with real customers, real capacity, and a strong regional position. We believe this transaction has the potential to accelerate our North American growth strategy and broaden the platform we are building.”

Founded in 2008, Rochester Colo’s facility is located at 1100 Pittsford Victor Rd in the Pittsford area of Rochester. Online listings suggest the building currently offers 7,000 sq ft (650 sqm) of white space with 1MW of live capacity, with potential to reach 15,000 sq ft (1,393 sqm) of white space and 4MW of capacity.

Jim Salviski, Rochester Colo CEO, added: “This LOI reflects a shared vision for scaling high-quality data center services in the Rochester market and beyond. We believe Carrier Connect brings the public-market platform, growth capital, and strategic ambition to build on the foundation we have created, and we are excited about the opportunity to help support that next phase of growth.”

The 36,000 sq ft (3,345 sqm) property is reportedly known as the Voplex building and once hosted the Voplex automotive company.

Salviski, founder of LogicalSolutions, acquired the building in 2008 and converted the warehouse portion of the site into a data center. ISP Earthlink acquired LogicalSolutions around 2011, before selling its IT services business and the data center to Synoptek in 2016. Salviski bought the site back last year, relaunching the facility as Rochester Colo.

Launched in 2019, Carrier initially operated a seven-rack presence for a handful of clients in the Spencer Building carrier hotel at Harbour Centre in Vancouver, before moving to a larger space at 200 Burrard in 2022 and closing the Spencer Building operation.

The operator now describes itself as a “data center company on a mission to roll up Tier II/III data centers internationally that specialize in delivering colocation,” and has been acquiring a number of assets in the last year.

Carrier currently operates a data center at 200 Burrard Street in Vancouver. Launched in 2022, the facility offers capacity for 50 racks. The 21-story office building totals more than 365,000 sq ft (33,910 sqm).

The company recently acquired Ottawa-based PureColo, taking over two facilities in the Ontario city. Last year also saw the firm acquire a data center in Perth, Australia: the 2MW facility offers capacity for up to 220 racks.

Earlier this year, the firm acquired the data center business assets owned and operated by Canadian managed services provider Carbon60, taking over capacity in St. John, New Brunswick.
