ARCATA, Calif. — Arcata officials have approved permits for the Yurok Tribe to move forward with a new Natural Resources Campus at 820 N St., a project expected to renovate existing buildings and make site improvements.
The commission unanimously approved two permits that allow the tribe to renovate three buildings and remove a shed on the property. The campus is planned as a hub for the tribe’s Natural Resources Division, which is responsible for monitoring and protecting the environment.
Although construction has not yet begun, Arcata Community Development Director David Loya said the city supports the partnership and the project’s goals.
“You know, in terms of working with the Yurok on this project, I mean, I’m thankful that they brought forward a really well-designed and thoughtful project to increase the job base. We’re always looking to help support our regional partners, particularly when they’re investing in Arcata and really taking a serious look at helping us to implement our vision for the city,” Loya said.
Loya also said the Yurok Tribe would occupy the entire site. Plans also call for one of the buildings to be torn down to create a courtyard, with the middle building located in the interior.
