A {{already_used_link_2}} firm specializing in critical metals processing, pH7 Technologies Inc., has obtained up to $5 million in financial backing from Natural Resources Canada. This funding originates from the Energy Innovation Programs Mining Decarbonization Demonstration Call for Proposals. The company intends to assess an unprecedented copper production method utilizing ore samples sourced from the Trekor Metals Gibraltar Mine located in British Columbia.

The initiative seeks to confirm the effectiveness of pH7’s exclusive closed-loop copper extraction system. This system transforms low-grade sulfide ore directly into 99.9% pure copper cathodes at the mining location, concurrently producing green hydrogen as a beneficial secondary output. Should the project prove successful, it will yield the operational, environmental, and economic information necessary to facilitate potential future expansion and implementation throughout Canada’s mining industry.

Mohammad Doostmohammadi, pH7 Technologies’ Founder and Chief Executive Officer, observed that rising copper consumption driven by electrification, renewable energy systems, artificial intelligence, and sophisticated manufacturing presents the sector with the difficulty of boosting supply while lessening ecological effects. He further remarked that the backing from Natural Resources Canada confirms the significance of fostering homegrown Canadian technologies capable of reinforcing essential mineral supply chains, enhancing resource utilization, and aiding in the mining sector’s decarbonization.

The Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, remarked that Canada possesses the resources, expertise, and groundbreaking technologies required to become a worldwide frontrunner in critical minerals. He highlighted that endeavors such as this one contribute to fortifying domestic supply networks, boosting the mining sector’s competitiveness, and fostering economic expansion while promoting more effective and sustainable resource exploitation.

Adil Cheema, Director of Process Engineering at Trekor Metals, stated that satisfying future copper requirements will necessitate both fresh supply origins and novel methods to enhance the effectiveness of current operations. He expressed that Trekor Metals is happy to back the assessment of developing technologies like pH7’s method and anticipates the knowledge gained through this initiative.

The project will proceed through engineering and technology development stages, producing the technical information required to assess future demonstration prospects and reduce risks for eventual commercial application. The NRCan funding is designed to assist subsequent construction and demonstration stages, contingent upon technical and commercial assessments from both parties. By facilitating the creation of high-purity copper cathodes directly at mining locations, pH7’s technology could boost recovery from low-grade deposits, prolong the usefulness of current mining assets, and support Canada’s prominence in sustainable critical minerals production.
