Netherlands Investment Rises 0.1% in July; Climate Weakens in August – News and Statistics

Investment in tangible fixed assets in the Netherlands edged up 0.1 percent year on year in July, according to Statistics Netherlands. The statistics agency reported that the modest annual gain was driven mainly by higher spending on machinery, a category that includes defence equipment.

Offsetting that increase, the agency said, were lower year-on-year investments in aircraft, buildings, infrastructure and passenger cars. The July figures were not adjusted for calendar effects, and the month contained the same number of working days as July 2025.

The July reading followed a stronger June, when investment rose 2.8 percent compared with a year earlier, based on the agency’s figures.

Investment climate weakens in August

Conditions for investment in the Netherlands became less favourable in August than they had been in July, the agency said. It attributed the deterioration mainly to a smaller year-on-year increase in goods exports.

The agency publishes a monthly update on the investment climate through its visualisation of investment conditions, which takes into account factors such as the state of sales markets and financial markets. While the indicators in that visualisation correlate reasonably well with fixed investment, the agency noted that improved conditions do not automatically translate into stronger growth or a shallower contraction in investment.

The agency also referenced its StatLine data on gross fixed capital formation in tangible assets, its investment conditions visualisations, a 2025 publication on the Caribbean Netherlands in numbers, and a new survey of the semiconductor industry.
