According to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, this is the first offspring from the Przewalski’s horses brought to Kazakhstan under the international reintroduction initiative. The male foal stood on its feet shortly after birth, began following its mother, and is feeding well. Specialists report both mother and foal are in good condition.
“The foal’s mother, Tessa, a seven‑year‑old mare brought from Berlin’s Tierpark Zoo in 2024, gave birth to her first offspring. The reintroduction program was launched in 2024, with seven horses delivered that year, followed by seven more in 2025 and eight in 2026. By 2029, around 40 Przewalski’s horses are expected to be relocated to Kazakhstan,” the ministry says.
Officials highilight that the birth of the first foal demonstrates a successful adaptation of the Przewalski’s horses to the steppe conditions. The ultimate goal of the program is to form a self‑sustaining population of Przewalski’s horses capable of reproducing naturally in the wild.
On June 5, the second group of Przewalski’s horses arrived in Kazakhstan from Tierpark Berlin in Germany.
