Investment platform smallcase has expanded beyond stocks and ETFs with the launch of mutual fund model portfolios, aiming to help investors move from selecting individual schemes to investing through professionally managed portfolio strategies.

The Bengaluru-based company has introduced more than 30 mutual fund portfolios across categories such as fund picks, multi-asset strategies and cash management solutions. The portfolios combine direct mutual funds across asset management companies (AMCs) and are designed around specific investment objectives, risk profiles and time horizons.

“Over the years, we’ve seen investors move from selecting individual products to seeking more structured portfolio approaches. Mutual Fund smallcases are a natural extension of this shift. Mutual funds have long been a trusted investment choice for Indians. Mutual fund smallcases help investors move from choosing individual funds to managed investment strategies,” said Vasanth Kamath, founder and CEO, smallcase.

New segment

The launch marks the company’s entry into a new segment after building its business around model portfolios of stocks, ETFs, REITs and InvITs. According to Kamath, more than ₹2 lakh crore has been transacted through smallcases since the platform’s launch in 2016, with the format increasingly emerging as a distinct investment product category.

Kamath said the mutual fund model portfolio format addresses a growing challenge for retail investors: navigating an increasingly crowded mutual fund universe and constructing balanced portfolios aligned to their goals.

“The whole concept of investing with an objective becomes way more simpler with mutual fund smallcases. Whether it is parking cash, building a multi-asset portfolio, selecting fund managers across categories or investing towards a long-term goal, the portfolio format helps simplify decision-making for investors,” said Kamath.

Platform offering

The company is offering the portfolios through its execution-only platform (EOP) framework, allowing investors to invest via both lump-sum and SIP modes using direct mutual fund plans. Investors continue to hold the underlying mutual funds in their own names while receiving portfolio updates and rebalancing recommendations through the platform.

Drawing parallels with global markets, Kamath said model portfolios have become a major channel for wealth management in developed markets and expects a similar trend to emerge in India as advisors, research analysts and asset managers increasingly adopt the format.

“We believe model portfolios will become an important layer between investors and investment products. Just as they have transformed advisory and portfolio construction in markets like the US, we expect mutual fund model portfolios to see significant adoption in India over the next few years,” said Kamath.
