Calumet stock dropped 5.7% to close at US$39.48 after its latest earnings, even though the quarter featured one clear headline. The company produced US$175m of adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization, and generated more than US$90m of cash from operations, while continuing to pay down debt.
In the short term, traders are reacting to a red price screen. Over a multi year horizon, the real story is the balance sheet repair. Management is retiring higher cost obligations and relying on that cash engine to reduce negative equity.
Love Calumet’s cash generation and debt paydown but worried about balance sheet risk and equity deficits hanging over the story? Consider screening for companies with similar cash engines but stronger fundamentals using the list of solid balance sheet and fundamentals stocks (49 results).

Calumet’s Bull Story: Cash Engine Now Hitting Key Marks
The bullish pitch around Calumet is that a high margin renewables and specialty engine can fund debt reduction and eventually reshape the equity story. Q2 gives hard evidence that this is starting to happen. Adjusted EBITDA of US$175m and more than US$90m of cash from operations backed actual debt retirement, with restricted group leverage already under 4x and management signaling a move below 3x next quarter as more high cost paper is retired.
On operations, the thesis that specialty and Montana Renewables can carry the load also gained support. Specialty Products & Solutions generated US$161.7m of adjusted EBITDA with record specialty production. Montana Renewables still produced roughly US$17m of adjusted EBITDA despite downtime and foregone MaxSAF-150 margin, while completing a successful performance test of the MaxSAF catalyst and locking in evergreen SAF contracts at a premium to renewable diesel.

Calumet Bear Case: Policy, Capital and Cash Still Under Scrutiny
The bearish view on Calumet says regulatory risk, capital access and legacy exposure could keep pressure on returns even after a strong year. Q2 does not close that file. Montana Renewables EBITDA of about US$17m came with meaningful downtime and roughly US$40m of foregone MaxSAF 150 margin, so the renewables engine is not yet running at the scale that would fully offset policy or credit volatility.
Bears also worry that financing remains fragile. Management is paying down high cost paper and restricted group leverage has already fallen below 4x, which pushes against the idea that ESG driven capital flight is blocking progress. However, Calumet still reports a quarterly net loss of US$95.9m and working capital absorbed roughly US$70m of cash. That is clear evidence that balance sheet risk has eased but not fully cleared and that free cash flow remains exposed to execution and policy shifts.
After working capital absorbed US$70m and Montana Renewables produced modest EBITDA with downtime, review our risk analysis for Calumet which shows 1 important warning sign to see if these pressures signal deeper structural issues.
