Typically, discussions about the recovery of the Ukrainian economy focus on investment, manufacturing, exports, and infrastructure reconstruction. At the same time, one factor is often overlooked—a factor without which it is impossible to imagine the development of any of the world’s leading economies: intellectual property (IP). The paradox is that in Ukraine, IP is still predominantly viewed as a narrow legal field. For years, we have underestimated the real contribution of IP, and only now are we beginning to measure it within a relevant framework. I’d like to discuss an important step in this direction.

IP is no longer an “invisible” part of the economy

Today, the world of intangible assets based on intellectual property is experiencing a real boom. According to data According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in 2025 the value of global corporate intangible assets reached nearly $100 trillion, accounting for 67% of global GDP.

Ukrainians are also keeping pace with modern trends by actively creating innovative and creative products. Despite this, until recently, the economic impact of IP in our country had been overlooked. To address this issue, the UKRNOIVI team, in collaboration with researchers from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, for the first time carried out a comprehensive assessment of the contribution of IP-intensive industries to Ukraine’s economy.
