KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – The vacant land at 1200 Independence at the former Belvidere Park will officially become a behavioral health hospital to treat hundreds with mental illness.
The new facility will provide care for at least 200 Missourians struggling to find the necessary assistance.
The ordinance outlines the entire property as 533 Tracy Avenue, 1200 Independence Avenue, and 1408 Independence Avenue.
The land formally known as Belvidere Park is about 15.5 acres.
Back in the 1950s, the Chouteau Courts public housing development was built on the land. It had 144 units and around 500 residents before it was completely demolished and swept away in 2020.

The ordinance was introduced by Kansas City, Missouri Mayor Quinton Lucas and co-sponsored by several council members. Last week’s City Council vote officially designates the park property as surplus to the city’s needs.
The Missouri Department of Mental Health and University Health, which is about two miles from the 1200 Independence Avenue spot, will lead the operations. They said the hospital will support more than 600 new jobs along with helping all those in need.
