SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – 32 teachers in Shelby County have received $1,000 for their classrooms.
The money comes from the Shelby County Schools Education Foundation and totals over $38,000.
Last year, around $30,000 were given in grant funds and the foundation tries to increase that number each year.
These inspire-the-journey grants are given out to school personnel like teachers, principals or librarians.
Although the grant money can be used for classroom items, one teacher from Oak Mountain Intermediate School decided to use her money for a classroom project.
The project requires stop motion animation, which is a hands-on activity for students that involves reading, writing and creativity but the equipment needed is expensive.
However, 5th grade teacher Krista Bender told WBRC, with the help of the grant money she is able to get the additional supplies her kids need to create a successful project like iPads and the stop motion app.
“I want them to be able to showcase what they create and what they do and showcase their learning. And so, this project would not have been possible without the funds to do it. And so, I’m really excited about letting their creative minds just go crazy and write their own narrative in a way that is exciting to them,” Bender says.
Bender said her kids are very excited and can’t wait to get this material to show off their projects to their parents and peers.
Bender went on to thank Bethany Ivy and the Shelby County Education Foundation for their support.
The checks will go out the first week of April.
