GRAIN VALLEY, Mo. — With more severe weather on the horizon Wednesday night, some spots in Jackson County are still cleaning-up from the previous night.
One of the worst spots hit was north of Interstate, 70 past Grain Valley, toward Lafayette County.
Some homeowners were getting their roofs checked during the day before a possible second-round of hail Wednesday evening.
The National Weather Service took reports of hail up to 2-inches in the area. FOX4 also talked to people who saved some of their hail in a freezer that was was even larger than that.
Vivian Still, 8, said her first thought was of her chickens.
“They came over, the storm was starting to come, and I started to get a little worried,” she said.
“And my dad was like ‘This is not right. We should go inside.’ And then boom. I could hear the roof just like ‘Boom!’ like all the hail just coming on,” Still said.
While the hail damage wasn’t extreme, roofs appeared to be the focus of repair checks.
Still’s family will likely need a new one after getting pelted by hailstone, saved in a plastic bag.
“When the hail started to stop, we just went out there and we just started to find the biggest pieces,” Still said.
As for the chicken, Still said they’re all safe after taking shelter in their new coop.
“At first I got a little nervous but after that I just got really happy and excited,” she said. “You don’t usually want to lose any part of your family.”
