At this week’s Rule Symposium in Boca Raton, Florida, resource investors learned that gold’s price surge is transforming the metal from a simple safe-haven asset into functional collateral. Analysts observed that central bank purchases, movements of physical metal, and the pursuit of alternatives to the U.S. dollar are integrating gold and silver more deeply into the financial system. Andy Schectman, founder and CEO of Miles Franklin, remarked that the entities creating money are acquiring the one asset they cannot manufacture, calling this trend either concerning or noteworthy. He characterized the development as a transition from a Western paper-based settlement framework to a non-Western system demanding immediate physical delivery.
World Gold Council figures highlight this shift in market composition. During the first quarter, total gold demand, inclusive of over-the-counter transactions, increased by 2% to 1,231 tonnes, while its monetary value surged 74% to a record $193 billion. Bar and coin demand climbed 42% to 474 tonnes, and central banks added a net 244 tonnes to their reserves. Schectman linked these movements to a broader strategy by governments and large investors to hold metal free of counterparty risk, citing China’s gold acquisitions, the repatriation of bullion from Western depositories like COMEX, and the expansion of payment systems operating outside the dollar as evidence of strain in the paper-based metals trade centered on London and New York.
COMEX, a subsidiary of CME Group (Nasdaq: CME), has traditionally allowed participants to roll over or settle futures contracts without taking possession of bars. Schectman noted that rising delivery volumes and warehouse withdrawals indicate that certain major buyers now seek physical metal rather than mere price exposure.
Frank Trotter, CEO of Battle Bank, has structured his enterprise around this concept. The institution provides high-yield cash accounts, foreign-currency deposits, precious metals storage, and loans backed by bullion. Trotter reported that in its initial months of operation, Battle received more metal than cash by dollar value. The bank extends credit against stored gold and silver at up to half their value, enabling clients to obtain liquidity without selling their holdings, thereby converting gold and silver into functional collateral.
Litman, chief investment officer of Altimetry Research based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, presented a contrasting viewpoint. He argued that U.S. equities do not need to decline for gold to thrive, explaining that inflation and changes in accounting rules distort reported earnings, making the stock market appear pricier than it actually is. Altimetry’s standardized accounting metrics indicate that U.S. companies achieve significantly higher returns than their global counterparts, aided by productivity improvements from artificial intelligence. Litman stated that the forces driving gold and those boosting U.S. equities are not necessarily opposed.
Junior mining firms, however, require more than a robust metal price; they need investors prepared to assume greater risk. S&P Global Market Intelligence reported that global nonferrous exploration spending fell for a second consecutive year in 2024 to $12.5 billion, as junior companies struggled to secure funding. Mining stocks on the TSXV have since recovered, and the exchange’s top performers this year raised over $1.5 billion, indicating a selective market that favors established winners rather than a broad reopening for early-stage explorers.
The discussions at the Rule Symposium paint an uneven landscape for miners. Gold’s monetary appeal can initially benefit producers by boosting margins and cash flow. Developers may follow if investors believe elevated prices will persist long enough to justify financing new mines. Silver could gain more if physical demand has tightened a market still priced through paper contracts, but silver miners encounter the same obstacle as gold juniors: a sector may enjoy strong commodity prices yet still struggle for equity if investors perceive faster returns elsewhere.
