DES MOINES, Iowa (WOI) – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is advising residents to avoid swimming at four state beaches due to safety concerns.

The Iowa DNR reported that several beaches failed safety tests for E. coli or toxic algae.

The state beaches that exceeded the single-sample limit for E. coli include:

  • Beeds Lake Beach in Hampton, Franklin County
  • Bobwhite State Park in Allerton, Wayne County
  • Pine Lake South Beach in Eldora, Hardin County

The DNR also recommends avoiding swimming at Lake Darling Beach due to high levels of algal toxins.

Water testing has been halted at both Blue Lake and Lake Keomah beaches due to low water levels.

Backbone Beach in Delaware County is now cleared for swimming by the DNR following May 27 water testing, after previously exceeding E. coli limits.

The county and city beaches that exceeded the single-sample limit for E. coli include:

  • Lake Iowa Park Beach in Ladora, Iowa County
  • Treman Park Beach in Manson, Calhoun County.

The DNR warns that swimming in polluted water poses several health risks, including gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea, as well as skin, respiratory and ear infections.
