DALLAS COUNTY, Iowa (Iowa Capital Dispatch) – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating a spill into Bulger Creek in Dallas County that occurred after a large structure fire south of De Soto.
The fire at an auto salvage facility caused a release of an unknown amount of fuel, oil and water into the nearby creek, according to a news release from DNR.
When DNR staff responded to the incident Wednesday, they observed an “oily sheen” on the creek, according to the release.
Local officials are assisting with placing absorbent booms in Bulger Creek to minimize the amount of spilled materials that flow downstream. Bulger Creek flows into the Raccoon River near Van Meter.
According to the news release, the fire was extinguished and no dead fish have been observed in the creek, though downstream users are advised to use precaution in the water.
WHO 13 reported the Aug. 19 fire at Hawkeye Auto Salvage left one person injured.
