Air defence missiles and counter-drone equipment are included in a significant new US package of military assistance for Ukraine.
The additional security assistance is to meet Ukraine’s “critical security and defence needs” to defend against Russia’s evolving tactics on the battlefield.
This latest Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) package, which has an estimated value of $125 million (£95 million approximately), comes as Ukraine celebrates 33 years of independence.
What’s included?
This latest package will provide Ukraine with additional capabilities, including air defence capabilities, munitions for rocket systems and artillery, and anti-tank weapons.
The capabilities in this announcement include:
- Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (c-UAS) equipment and munitions
- Ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS)
- 155mm and 105mm artillery ammunition
- Tube-launched, Optically tracked, Wire-guided (TOW) missiles
- Javelin and AT-4 anti-armour systems
- High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) ambulances
- Small arms ammunition
- Medical equipment
- Demolition equipment and munitions
- Spare parts, ancillary equipment, services, training, and transportation
Today, Ukraine celebrates its Independence Day more than two and a half years after the Kremlin launched its full-scale invasion.
“The United States and the international coalition of some 50 Allies and partners remain committed to supporting Ukraine’s brave defenders that continue to fight against Russian aggression”, said the US Department of Defence.
Members of the British public are being called upon to Make Noise For Ukraine to mark the country’s independence day.
Countries from across Nato are leading the campaign, urging citizens not to be silent in the face of Russia’s aggression, posting a video making noise on social media with the hashtag #MakeNoiseForUkraine.
To mark Ukrainian Independence Day, Chief of the Defence Staff Admiral Sir Tony Radakin explains how the Armed Forces of Ukraine are an inspiration to people around the world.
“Their initiative, tenacity and skills are an example to the UK Armed Forces; and the clarity of their cause is an inspiration to freedom-loving peoples everywhere,” said Adm Radakin.
Defence Secretary John Healey celebrated the close relationship between the UK and Ukraine and the firm commitment the UK continues to show to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
He said: “Ukraine has no firmer friend than the UK and we will stand with them for as long as it takes.
“Britain is united for Ukraine.”
