Tottenham youngster linked to loan move

According to journalist Eduardo Burgos, Tottenham Hotspur are currently negotiating with newly promoted side Southampton over a season-long loan for their Argentine forward, Alejo Veliz.

Burgos said that it would be a simple loan, without an option to buy Veliz on a permanent deal, further stating that Veliz is seen as part of the long-term project at Spurs.

Veliz has fallen below Will Lankshear in the pecking order at Spurs and it is clear that a loan is best for his immediate development

However, it is well documented that Spurs have often been careless when loaning out their young stars, and have often seemed to loan them out for the sake of a loan, rather than any nuance or thought into how good a fit it would be.

Veliz is one of these players who have suffered as a result of this. The Argentine forward was loaned to Sevilla for the second half of last season,

So if Spurs are to loan Veliz to Southampton, they must have assurances that he will get a certain amount of minutes and suits their style of play.

Russell Martin, the current Southampton manager, generally plays a pretty positive style of football. They like to dominate the ball and create chances. The build-up can be quite slow at times, but they do create chances for their forwards and he would get opportunities to play.

Southampton are lacking somewhat in the center-forward position. Sekou Mara started just 4 games in the Championship, and Paul Onuachu spent the season on loan in Turkey.

Ben Brereton Diaz and Adam Armstrong are good players – but have also spent large periods of their careers out on the left and right wings respectively.

Thus, there is a scenario where you can imagine Veliz getting regular minutes for Southampton. Brereton Diaz and Armstrong flanking Veliz in a front three sounds exciting and a good move for Veliz, if the move happens.

He could also be playing with compatriot Charly Alcaraz, which could help him to settle in.
