Chelsea eye Championship loan move for Diego Moreira

Chelsea are planning to loan Diego Moreira to an English club this season and have earmarked the Championship as a potential destination according to reports.

The Blues have got to sort out the future of a number of players before the transfer window slams shut and as well as permanent moves they need to source loans for a number of talented youngsters.

What makes this task tricky is that there’s only a limited amount of international loans available and Chelsea therefore need to carefully select domestic loans that will see players get enough game time in order to develop.

Moreira earmarked for Championship loan

Chelsea have already loaned out Andrey Santos to Strasbourg, whilst Alfie Gilchrist has joined Sheffield United for the season.

New signing Caleb Wiley is expected to also join Strasbourg on loan, but several others need to leave in order to cut the squad size down.

Moreira, who joined Chelsea on a free transfer last summer from Benfica falls into that category, but journalist Sacha Tavolieri has reported they are planning to loan the 20-year-old to an English club.

He took to X.com and said:

“Info #ChelseaFC : Blues are planning to loan Diego Moreira Jr in England this season. BlueCo & player side looking for a solution on a season loan likely in #SkyChampionship. #mercato #PL #CFC.”

The Portugal under-21 international made his debut in the Carabao Cup under Mauricio Pochettino before joining French side Lyon on loan, where he made just nine appearances before being recalled in January.

Moreira spent the second half of last season with Chelsea’s under-21 side, making nine appearances and scoring five goals, and Chelsea are now trying to source a domestic loan for him with international loan spots limited.

The Championship is a great division to cut your teeth in and Chelsea have successfully loaned the likes of Reece James, Fikayo Tomori and Mason Mount to the Championship with great success.
