The Social Security Administration (SSA) has confirmed the next SSI payment for the 1st of April. SSI beneficiaries will receive their benefits, which are regularly given to people with low income and resources who are blind, 65 or older, or have a qualifying condition. Children with disabilities or who are blind might also qualify for the SSI payments offered by Social Security.
The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program is overseen by the SSA and sends monthly payments to Americans who earn less than $1,971 per month from work. More than 8 million people, including 1.2 million children with disabilities, rely on SSI to meet their necessities. To be eligible, applicants must meet the income and resource criteria established by the Social Security Administration. Furthermore, the maximum monthly SSI payout in 2024 will be $943 for individuals, $1,415 for couples, and $2,590 for blind people.
SSI payments are only available to the most vulnerable Americans
Most SSI recipients are elderly or have serious disabilities that prevent them from working for themselves. More than a quarter are elderly, 15% are children with severe disabilities, and the remainder are adults with significant impairments. They have very low incomes, with eligibility reduced to around 200 percent of poverty for families with a disabled child.
Moreover, adult applicants face even stricter income limits, with two-thirds of recipients being poor. Regarding income criteria, SSI applicants must have countable savings of less than $2,000 (or $3,000 for a couple), which should have been frozen for decades.
Qualifying for SSI payments is difficult, but not impossible
Applicants for SSI payments must meet the stringent medical requirements set forth by law, which include having a serious physical or mental impairment that is projected to endure for at least 12 months or cause death, as determined by medical evidence. Adults must additionally demonstrate that they are unable to obtain meaningful employment anywhere in the economy, regardless of whether such employment is available where they reside, whether a particular position is open, or whether they would be hired.

Thousands of eligible children with disabilities are not receiving SSI payments
Children from low-income families who have a major disability may be eligible for SSI payments, but the reality is that many of them are not getting these benefits. Thousands of disabled children may be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits but currently, they are not taking advantage of this federal government support. Thanks to a new analysis conducted by the research firm Mathematica, the Social Security Administration was able to confirm that between 2013 and 2021, there was a 20% decrease in the number of children receiving Supplemental Security Income benefits.
Researchers discovered that over 110,000 children may be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), representing a 10% increase over current enrollment. However, depending on the likelihood threshold, the increase could be up to 55%. Children who qualify for SSI but do not receive it have difficulty enrolling, frequent healthcare visits, and long-term health issues, which may indicate developmental delays.
Social Security Administration representatives stated that they are thinking about how to implement the report’s suggestions. According to the agency, there have been significant increases in the number of child SSI applications, and it is collaborating with outside parties to connect with individuals who may qualify for SSI.
