Police have targeted criminals travelling across county borders and searched for stolen farm machinery as part of a crackdown on crime in rural Northamptonshire.

Northamptonshire Police’s Rural Crime Team joined neighbouring forces and other agencies for a series of operations targeting offences affecting farms, businesses, landowners and communities across the county.

The activity took place between September 7 and 11 as part of National Rural Crime Week, but officers say the work continues throughout the year.

A Northamptonshire Police spokesperson said Operation Pound focused on finding stolen caravans, agricultural machinery and other valuable equipment.

Officers worked with specialist partners to check vehicles, establish ownership of equipment and prevent stolen property being moved around the county.

The team also joined Warwickshire Police for a cross-border operation targeting offenders who travel between counties to commit crimes. Officers shared intelligence, carried out vehicle checks and dealt with driving offences.

Another joint operation with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency saw vehicles stopped to check they were safe and legal, while also looking for stolen agricultural machinery, plant and other property.

Meanwhile, Operation Walrus saw officers patrol rural crime hotspots in an attempt to deter thefts and gather intelligence.

Hare coursing was another focus, with proactive patrols carried out and officers working with landowners following reports.

Police also joined the Environment Agency and local bailiffs for Operation Traverse, which focused on fishing rights, thefts of fish and angling equipment and breaches of fishing laws.

Sergeant Gary Liddle, of Northamptonshire Police’s Rural Crime Team, said: “Working closely with partner organisations, neighbouring police forces, farmers, landowners and local residents helps us prevent crime, catch offenders and keep our rural areas safe.”

He said officers remained committed to tackling the issues affecting people living and working in Northamptonshire’s countryside.
