Benton to go ahead
with plans for park
Benton is moving ahead with plans to build a 511-acre recreational vehicle park and sports complex on the city’s southwest edge, according to a plan submitted to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Vicksburg District on June 13.
The city originally announced plans for the park — called the Thomas Benton Park — in 2023, according to a report by the Saline Courier. The city’s largest single land acquisition, the park will include the RV park for campers, soccer fields and a sports facility, among other amenities.
The $7.6 million acquisition of the 511 acres will be paid in installments over 10 years, according to the same Saline Courier report.
The city is seeking regulatory approval for the project because components will affect the Saline River, which is under the jurisdiction of the Corps. Parts of the waterway will be filled for a pier and boat ramp, according to the application.
The Corps found 11 “threatened, endangered, proposed or candidate species” in the area. The Corps has yet to issue a permit. Public comments are open on the project until July 4.
