Cambodia has been ranked the world’s number one country for natural environment in 2026 by U.S. News & World Report, with the recognition highlighting the Kingdom’s environmental protection efforts, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development policies.
The global ranking assessed countries based on environmental governance, air quality, natural resource management and biodiversity conservation, while also evaluating how nations balance economic development with environmental sustainability.
According to the report, which was also published by SEA Infographics, Cambodia ranked first globally and within Southeast Asia for natural environment quality.
Minister of Environment Eang Sophalleth described the recognition as a significant achievement for Cambodia and its people on the international stage.
“It is a great honour for Cambodia and the Cambodian people in the field of environment and natural resources internationally,” he said.
The minister said the ranking reflects the long-term environmental protection policies and institutional foundations established under the leadership of Senate President and former Prime Minister Hun Sen.
He added that the achievements continue to be strengthened under the seventh-mandate Royal Government led by Prime Minister Hun Manet through the implementation of the first phase of the “Pentagonal Strategy”, which prioritises environmental sustainability and green development.
Cambodia currently manages 73 protected natural areas covering more than seven million hectares, representing approximately 41 percent of the country’s total land area.
Authorities said the protected areas play a key role in preserving forests, protecting wildlife habitats and conserving biodiversity through stricter law enforcement and conservation measures.
The Ministry of Environment said it has been working closely with relevant ministries, institutions, local authorities, conservation communities and development partners to strengthen the sustainable management of environmental and natural resources.
The ministry also highlighted the continued implementation of its “Circular Strategy on Environment”, which focuses on cleanliness, greenness and sustainability.
As part of broader environmental efforts, Cambodia has accelerated reforestation programmes through nationwide tree-planting campaigns.
The ministry said it has promoted the planting and distribution of at least one million tree saplings to citizens as part of efforts to restore forests and expand green coverage across the country.
The ministry said the programme also contributes to climate resilience, supports local community economies and aligns with Cambodia’s target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
