A new estate of 250 houses to be built on cleared land in the town centre may, at last, be close to realisation.
Swindon Borough Council has long had in its plans for the cleared Kimmerfields site a development of up to 250 houses.
But progress has been glacially slow.
Just over a year ago, senior councillors and officers were expressing frustration with an unnamed financial institution, which agreed to buy the land in October 2022 in a private and confidential deal, because there had been no movement and no planning application.
There still has been no application, but the council’s director of strategic growth, Richard Bell, told the corporate overview & scrutiny committee a deal was coming along.

He said: ”The infrastructure is there and the residential plot, we are close to doing a deal.
“We’ve been close to doing a deal for some considerable de time, but it’s a slightly different deal, but now, the infrastructure is in place, and things can actually start coming forward, particularly now the bus station is moving out and Fleming Way is coming to completion.”
The rest of the plan for the cleared site behind the new Zurich building and the Tricentre includes a public space, open space and land for commercial uses.
