A social media influencer was arrested for allegedly snatching a bag containing Rs 3 lakh in cash from a businessman in North Delhi’s Civil Lines area, the police said Tuesday.
Officers said the accused, Pawan alias Calvin alias Network of Madangir in South Delhi, posted dance videos and funny reels and had over 16,000 followers on Instagram but committed thefts along with his associate in the evenings.
Pawan revealed during questioning that he took to crime to earn easy money. He was previously arrested in a similar case involving the theft of a bag, the Delhi Police said in a statement.
Raja Banthia, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), North Delhi, said the complainant R Shrinivas Rao alleged that his bag containing Rs 3 lakh and documents was snatched outside St Stephen’s Hospital on March 4. The accused fled on foot before speeding away on a scooter driven by another person.
“A case was registered under section 304(2), 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Civil Lines police station and the scooter was spotted while examining CCTV footage,” the officer said.
The suspect’s path was traced using CCTV footage and further investigation led the officers to the address in Madangir. Subsequently, the accused was apprehended and the scooter used in the offence was seized, DCP Banthia added.
The officers recovered Rs 1.10 lakh of the stolen money. The snatched bag was also found from a nullah near ITO, the DCP said. A search is on to nab his associate.
