BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – From the sideline to the broadcast booth, much will look and sound different for Alabama football this season.
The latest move in what has been an off-season of transition for the Crimson Tide was when it was announced Chris Stewart would replace Eli Gold as the full-time play-by-play announcer for the Crimson Tide Sports Network’s radio broadcasts.
While appearing in Birmingham Monday, Alabama’s Athletic Director Greg Byrne was asked about Gold no longer being in the booth.
“Eli made a tremendous impact on our University and our programs,” Byrne said. “He had a great run as our play-by-play announcer and we wish him nothing but the best.”
Gold, during an appearance on Good Day Alabama last week, said the university “chose to go in a different direction.”
“My contract expires at the end of June and they will pay me through the end of my contract. Then, I have not been retained,” Gold said, stating emphatically he was not retiring.
Chris Stewart, who filled in for Gold in 2022 and called Bama’s away games in 2023, will take over full-time announce duties beginning with the 2024 A-Day game.
Byrne said he is excited for Stewart and his future as the play-by-play announcer.
