MALIBU, CA — Sitting on five vacant lots of prime real estate, Malibu is seeking community input on how the city should best make use of the 61 acres of open space.
After collecting feedback from hundreds of residents in recent months, city officials have identified 10 categories of potential uses for the properties. Now, they plan to gather more feedback over the next month to narrow down which of the 10 categories residents prefer for each of the five parcels.
The city-owned lots are:
- 9.29 acres at 23575 Civic Center Way — used for the Chili Cook-Off
- 1.11 acres at 23800 Civic Center Way — the triangle between Pacific Coast Highway, Civic Center Way and Webb Way
- 19 acres at 29136 Pacific Coast Highway — the Heathercliff Lot
- 29.67 acres at 6103 Trancas Canyon Road
- 2.3 acres at 23467 Civic Center Way, along La Paz Lane
And the 10 categories for potential reuse are:
- Commercial (parking, business development)
- Community (senior center, youth center, library, visitors center)
- Community pool/splash pad
- Grass sports fields (soccer, football, baseball, softball)
- Housing (workforce and senior)
- Indoor theater/arts center
- Open space (paths and trails, community garden)
- Outdoor amphitheater
- Sports courts (basketball, pickleball, tennis, bocci)
- Other (dog park, skate park, bike trails, bike parks)
“This outreach program underscores our commitment to including the needs and views of all of the community,” Mayor Steve Uhring said. “By actively involving our residents and all community members, and others, we are ensuring that Malibu remains a vibrant and thriving community for generations to come.”
The city through September will gather feedback via email and online at the Malibu Community Lands website, as well as at a series of popup events an community meetings:
- Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Malibu Middle/High School (for students, parents and staff only)
- Aug. 22 at 6 p.m., City Hall
- Aug. 23 from 6 to 9 p.m., Trancas County Market, 30745 Pacific Coast Highway
