Bill collector held for taking Rs 50,000 bribe for fixing vacant land tax | India News


TRICHY: A bill collector attached to the Thuvakudi municipality in Trichy was arrested for demanding and receiving bribe from a man for fixing vacant land tax to a plot in Trichy on Friday.
The sleuths of the directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption (DVAC), Trichy detachment caught the revenue assistant cum bill collector M Soundarapandian, 31 at the Thuvakudi municipality in Trichy district red-handed while taking a bribe of Rs 50,000 from P Kathirvel, 60 of KK Nagar in Trichy city, at the Thuvakudi municipality office today.
Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) G Manikandan of DVAC, Trichy detachment stated that Kathirvel a businessman from KK Nagar in Trichy owns a plot in the Thuvakudi municipality area. He applied to the municipality to fix the vacant land tax to the plot 15 days back when he met the bill collector Soundarapandian. The bill collector asked him to visit after two weeks.
Kathirvel went to the Thuvakudi municipality office and met Soundarapandian on July 29. Without processing the file, the bill collector demanded Rs 50,000 as a bribe to fix the vacant land tax for the plot. Soundarapandian also insisted that the bribe money should be alone Rs 50,000 and the vacant land tax should also be paid separately.
Unwilling to bribe the bill collector, Kathirvel complained to the DVAC, Trichy on August 01. DVAC team comprising inspectors Sakthivel, Prasanna Venkatesh and A Xavier Rani laid a trap to Soundarapandian. As planned, Kathirvel gave him the chemical-laced cash at the office of the latter. The team caught him with the money.
Soundarapandian is a native of Thiruvannamalai district. He was posted here at Thuvakudi.
