MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A repeat offender was arrested after he was found trying to hide in someone’s attic after an attempt to evade arrest.
Memphis Police said on February 16, officers went to the Dollar General on Elvis Presley Boulevard about a stolen car.
Police said that the woman was standing in line when she was approached by a man who demanded she give him his keys.
When she did not, the man snatched the keys from her and left in her 2004 Chrysler Crossfire.
On February 24, officers saw that the same car was driving East on Wabash Street and knew it was taken at that Dollar General.
Two men got out of the car and ran, police said.
Wayne Sanders, the driver went inside someone’s home with multiple weapons and tried to hide in the attic, police said.
He was later taken into custody.
Officers checked the area where Sanders was located and recovered the following weapons:
- Draco 762×39-Loaded
- Glock 21 .45 Caliber-Loaded
- Glock 19 .9mm (switch attached)-Loaded/Reported Stolen out of Southaven, MS
He was charged with the following:
- Convicted Felon in Possession of a Handgun x3
- Theft of Property $2,500-$10,000
- Theft of Property to Wit: Handgun $1,000-$2,500
- Evading Arrest To Wit: Foot Pursuit
- Possession of a Prohibited Weapon To Wit: Glock Handgun W/Machine Gun Switch
His bond was set at $35K.
Sanders was convicted on May 28, 2014, for Aggravated Assault, in which he served six years in the Tennessee Department of Corrections, police said.
His criminal history includes dates from December 2015, May 2018, October 2018, April 2020, and May 2021.
Records showed some of the charges from those offense dates include aggravated assault, possession of marijuana, criminal attempt of robbery, and theft of property.
