The Indian telcos are targeting a share of 10% of all 6G patents and one-sixth of contributions to global standards in the next three years. They have proposed systematically aligning research to India’s needs and establishing a vibrant Standards Community.
India has already taken various initiatives, such as the launch of Bhart6G Vision and Bhart6G Alliance, patent and IPR support framework, commissioning of testbeds, etc., and the country can aspire to achieve 10% of all 6G patents and one-sixth contributions to global standards promoting India’s needs. SAC proposed a three-year roadmap for achieving this.
Minister Scindia asked the SAC members to define a critical path to achieving the targets discussed and to define the roles they see for different stakeholders, including the government, in achieving them. He also urged the telcos to take all necessary measures to ensure citizens get good-quality telecom services.
The proposal came up during the second meeting of the Stakeholders Advisory Committee (SAC) on Telecom Service Providers (TSPs), which Jyotiraditya Scindia, Union Minister of Communications, chaired on August 23.
The meeting included deliberations on international standards, India’s share in Intellectual Property and Standard Essential Patent (SEP), connectivity gaps in telecom, and the quality of telecom services.
Pankaj Pawar, Reliance Jio’s Managing Director; Akshaya Moondra, Vodafone Idea’s CEO; Robert J Ravi, BSNL’s chairman and managing director; N. Ganapathy Subramaniam, Non-Executive Chairman and non-independent Director of Tejas Networks; and COAI Director General S P Kochhar also attended the meeting.
