From the Panhandle to the Gulf, there is plenty of great places to go fishing at in Texas. While most enjoy fishing at a lake, others like to fish the Gulf, rivers, streams, or even neighborhood ponds.
And for those who love fishing, a fishing license is a must most of the time. But did you know there are some exceptions to the rules?
Who Needs A Fishing License Texas?
Whether you heading out into the Gulf or standing on the banks of a local lake, fishing in Texas is great. So who needs a license in Texas? While there are some exceptions, everyone age 17 and older needs a fishing license in Texas. This includes anyone who is “actively participating” in fishing. So even if you are just in charge of the net or baiting hooks, you will need a license.
Types of Fishing Licenses in Texas
There are several options when it comes to purchasing a fishing license. You can choose a one day license or a Freshwater License for the year. Want to possibly fish the Gulf? Get an All-Water License for either a day or the year. According to FishingBooker, you will need both a license and an endorsement to legally fish around Texas. Those are normally sold together as a package. If you are a veteran or active duty personnel, you can look into getting a Super Combo License which includes hunting.
If you are fishing in Lake Texoma, there is even a special license for that lake according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

When a Fishing License Isn’t Needed in Texas
There are some times and places and even people who do not need a fishing license in the Lone Star State.
No one needs a fishing license if you are fishing from the bank or pier inside a Texas State Park. You also don’t need a fishing license on Texas’ annual Free Fishing Day. That day occurs on the first Saturday in June.
Kids under the age of 17 don’t need a license in Texas and if you are a Texas resident born before January 1, 1931, you do not need a license either. There are also exceptions for those with a mental disability according to TPWD.
Where Do You Get a Fishing License in Texas?
You can purchase a fishing license at many types of stores in Texas. Tackle shops, gun stores, hardwood stores, and even some grocery stores have the ability to sale a license.
