General Motors has recalled approximately 721,000 full-size trucks and SUVs while also ordering a stop-sale on remaining inventory for vehicles in the recall group. According to Car and Driver, the recall impacts the following vehicles from the 2021-2024 model years, equipped with the 6.2-liter V-8 engine:
- Cadillac Escalade
- Cadillac Escalade ESV
- Chevrolet Silverado 1500
- Chevrolet Suburban
- Chevrolet Tahoe
- GMC Sierra 1500
- GMC Yukon
- GMC Yukon XL
The recall is necessary as the internal engine parts (crankshaft and connecting rods) appear to have been damaged during manufacturing. The problem with the parts can cause a loss of power or even complete engine failure.
The issue has been under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration after it received 39 complaints from consumers who experienced engine failure.
All of the estimated 721,000 recalled vehicles –598,000 of which are in the U.S. — will need to pass an inspection. If the vehicle passes inspection, dealerships will replace the oil filter, oil cap, and add higher-viscosity 0W-40 oil. If the vehicles don’t pass inspection, the engines will be repaired or in some cases, require a total engine replacement.
The NHTSA investigation into the matter is ongoing.
