Thrissur: A court here has ordered the removal of a social media advertisement by a healthcare company, which has a partnership with actress Nayanthara and her husband, director Vignesh Shivan, for using the hit folk song ‘Karinkaali’ without permission.
The ruling of the principle sessions court came following a petition by representatives of the BlackBro music album, who hold the copyright for the song, against the firm Femi9 Healthcare.

The legal action was initiated by the producer of BlackBro, Jaineesh Manappully, who alleged that the song was used in an advertisement for Femi9 Healthcare’s sanitary napkins without authorization. It was argued that since the song was used in an advertisement aimed at commercially selling a product, it cannot be classified under non-commercial contexts, such as reels, where financial gain is not a factor.
The case was presented before Thrissur District Court Judge PP Saidalavi, with Adv. Alina Annabelle representing the BlackBro music album. Following the hearing, the court ordered the removal of the advertisement from all social media platforms, citing the unauthorised use of the copyrighted material.
