WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – As part of an effort to inventory waterlines throughout the city, the City of Lawton is asking residents to complete a survey that will assist in collecting data.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently issued regulations which stated that all Public Water Supply systems are required to develop a comprehensive Lead Service Line Inventory (LSI) of publicly owned and customer-owned service lines. The City is now participating in an ongoing initiative to identify and replace waterlines made with lead, which is restricted by Lawton plumbing codes that were implemented in 1991.
Many customer-owned service lines are not recorded by the City. To remedy this, the City is issuing a survey that will walk Lawton residents through the process of checking their service lines to determine and record the material the pipe was made with. The deadline to send this survey to the EPA is October 16, 2024.
For citizens who find that their service lines are indeed composed of lead or galvanized steel, Lawton’s Public Utilities Department is developing a pipe replacement program.
The City is also offering free lead testing for customers connected to the public water supply, to ensure that there is no lead above the action limit set by the EPA. Those interested are encouraged to contact the City’s Water Treatment Plant at (580) 529-2703 and ask for a chemist or tech lab to get started.
