Dual Derby winner Lambourn closes gap to Field Of Gold in latest Cartier Horse of the Year rankings

Lambourn closed the gap on Field Of Gold to just four points in the rankings for Cartier Horse of the Year after landing last month’s Irish Derby at the Curragh.

The son of Australia joined an elite group of dual Derby winners when denying Serious Contender, although he was less dominant than at Epsom earlier that month.

Field Of Gold has not yet had a chance to respond since his breathtaking St James’s Palace victory, but is set to line up in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood on July 30.

The grey’s stablemate Ombudsman sits in third position in the rankings, 16 points behind Lambourn, while Delacroix moved into fifth following his success in the Coral-Eclipse.

In the Cartier Older Horse standings, the Coral-Eclipse runner-up Ombudsman leapfrogged Sosie after finishing ahead of him at Sandown. Falmouth Stakes winner Cinderella’s Dream moved within two points of Sosie following her success at Newmarket, where she held off the Aidan O’Brien-trained January.

Godolphin’s Trawlerman remains comfortably clear in the Cartier Stayer category following his dominant Gold Cup victory. He is 22 points ahead of Candelari.

The Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly standings could shift dramatically soon as Minnie Hauk, who is 16 points behind her stablemate Whirl, is odds-on favourite to win the Irish Oaks on Saturday. The pair are among the market principals for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

The surprise Commonwealth Cup winner Time For Sandals remains top of the Cartier Sprinter leaderboard on 36 points, with fellow Ascot winners American Affair and Lazzat four points behind.

Also on 32 points is No Half Measures, who struck at Group 1 level for the first time when defeating Big Mojo in the July Cup at Newmarket on Saturday.
