Farmers protest in Rajpura to reclaim 533 acres of unused land

Patiala: Farmers associated with Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) and Ujara Roku Sangharash Committee on Friday staged a protest outside the SDM office in Rajpura, demanding the return of 533 acres of unused land that was acquired by Punjab govt for a private company in 1994 at a low price.
The protest coincided with SKM’s observance of ‘Corporates Quit India Day’ across the state.Prem Singh Bhangu, president of All India Kisan Federation (AIKF), said 10 organisations affiliated to SKM participated in the protest. Farmer leaders demanded the immediate de-notification of the unused land and its return to original owners. A memorandum was submitted to the SDM, who assured them it would be sent to the govt for consideration. “The land in question was part of 1,119 acres acquired in 1993 under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the private industry and Punjab govt. The MOU stipulated that if the project was not established within 10 years, thestate govt would have the right to resume the land without paying any compensation to the company.,” said Bhangu. tnn
