Police report sheds light on how a construction worker died


NORTH AUGUSTA — A police report said a construction worker who died during an accident was struck by machinery after falling from it and being run over. 

Ray C. Straight, 43, from West Virginia, was killed following a construction accident at the Lowe’s on Knox Avenue in North Augusta. 

Police received a call of a pedestrian that was struck by machinery and upon arrival officers began rapid trauma assessment of Straight, according to an incident report from North Augusta Department of Public Safety.

The report said an officer immediately began directing members of the police team to dress and control bleeding while another officer Rangel prepared to assist with respirations.

Another officer applied a tourniquet to the right leg and an officer applied dressing to the head injury, the report said.

The report said Straight began to decline while waiting for EMS to arrive.

An ongoing assessment determined that the victim had severe chest trauma and a decreasing pulse rate, the report said.

Once EMS arrived they checked for a heartbeat, but Straight was pronounced dead at the scene.

A witness told police that Straight was on the back of the ladder of machinery that was unknown to the operator and when the machine was backing up, Straight slipped from the ladder.

Straight was run over by the track up to his chest, the report said.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
