Mesa County Compost Facility gets new equipment

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) -The Mesa County Organic Materials Compost Facility is getting a new horizontal grinder.

A $776,000 purchase order for the equipment was approved by the Mesa County Commissioners during a public hearing on July 1.

The facility uses a horizontal grinder to process almost 45,000 cubic yards of yard waste every year. Waste that is dropped off by community members gets ground up into a smaller material that the facility can turn into compost.

The new grinder is replacing the 13-year-old grinder the facility currently has. Officials said they were able to get trade in value for the old equipment to offset some of the costs.

“It was time to purchase a new one and get a new upgraded grinder. The wear and tear on the old machine just increases maintenance costs, everything like that,” said Shay Starr, the Manager at the facility.
