The defiant connections of dual winner Champion Chase winner Energumene believe he is the forgotten horse of the Cheltenham Festival as they plot to upset hot favourite Jonbon and land a historic third win in Wednesday’s showpiece.
Energumene will be ridden by Paul Townend as Willie Mullins’ sole representative in the race after the trainer removed his three other contenders, including last season’s Arkle winner Gaelic Warrior, from the reckoning at Thursday’s confirmation stage.
The 11-year-old is a 7-1 chance to reverse the six-length beating he suffered at the hands of 4-5 favourite Jonbon in the Clarence House at Ascot in January and Sean Graham, racing manager to owner Tony Bloom, believes he can give Nicky Henderson’s star chaser a sterner challenge if some rain arrives at Cheltenham.
