Bolton Council agrees to Alderbank Close, Kearsley land sale

The land sale at Alderbank Close had been marked up for sale at well below its normal market value of £685,000.

The sale had previously been delayed, but after further debates about the price of the land Bolton Council and its partners has decided to proceed with the £100,000 figures.

Interim assistant director of corporate property Justin Clough said: “We did go back to the potential purchaser, which is Bolton at Home, we did ask them to reassess things and put best foot forward and see if there is anything else.

“£100,000 is still the price to pay for it based on their assessments.”

A previous attempt to sell the land at the same price had been delayed in January after the decision was “called in” by Farnworth and Kearsley First leader Cllr Paul Sanders.

He said at the time that the decision needed “more exploration” given how far below market value to price had fallen.

But after an extensive debate at the council’s corporate scrutiny committee, the proposal came back before a deputy leaders meeting at the same price.

Cllr Sanders asked the most recent meeting what kind of engagement the council had done with Bolton at Home and for assurances the bowling club rebuild would be progressed.

In response Mr Clough said that that the sale had been discussed with the strategic housing group and that he had written to Bolton at Home to point them to the scrutiny committee talks.

He said that council departments would be coordinating to make sure the club house rebuild went ahead.

Council opposition spokesperson Cllr Adele Warren said that was aware Alderbank Close had been a “challenging site” from her time as cabinet member for regeneration.

But she said it would add “much needed housing stock” and said that “hopefully we’ve got every box ticked for everyone involved.”

Council deputy leader Cllr Akhtar Zaman approved the land sale at £100,000.
