Less than 1 per cent of students at some universities who took out tuition fee loans have paid them back in full, new figures reveal.
The numbers, released under the Freedom of Information Act, expose the gulf between higher and lower ranking institutions and how quickly students clear their debts.
The Sunday Times asked the Department for Education (DfE) how many students from England had paid back their fee loans in full at 130 of Britain’s top universities.
Roughly a quarter of students at Oxford and Cambridge who have taken out loans to pay for undergraduate study since 2006, when tuition fee loans were introduced, had repaid the whole bill by August 2022, according to the data.
