Lauren Coughlin was always confident she would be a winner on the LPGA, even after some early years struggling to find her way in pro golf after turning pro in 2016. But what came after claiming her first title three weeks ago at the CPKC Women’s Open in Canada was not only the satisfaction of getting the job done, but a bit of relief.
Freed up from the mental burden of when win No. 1 might come, the 31-year-old Charlottesville, Va., resident quickly grabbed win No. 2, taking this week’s ISPS Handa Scottish Open title by four shots. A closing three-under 69 at Dundonald Links in Ayrshire, Scotland, gave Coughlin a 15-under 274 total to outpace recent Olympic silver medalist Esther Henseleit of Germany. Six shots back were Ayaka Furue and Megan Khang in a tie for third.
With her win, Coughlin claimed a first-place prize money payout of $300,000 from an overall purse of $2 million and became just the third player with multiple wins on the LPGA in 2024, joining Nelly Korda and Hannah Green. She also assured herself a spot on the U.S. Solheim Cup team that will be compete next month at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia. The automatic qualifying spots on Stacy Lewis’ team lock in after next week’s AIG Women’s Open. Coughlin was fourth on the list entering this week with the top seven assured of making Team USA.
