If this is what’s in store the next two weeks for the FedEx Cup Playoffs, we’re in store for some goodness.
Hideki Matsuyama was cruising, seemingly running away with the FedEx St. Jude Championship on Sunday, then it happened. He went through a four-hole stretch at TPC Southwind where he made bogey, par, bogey, double bogey and suddenly found himself a shot behind Victor Hovland.
The Japanese star, however, birdied the last two holes to ultimately win by two, shooting even-par 70 to end at 17-under-par 263 total. Xander Schauffele and Hovland tied for second place. Scottie Scheffler was fourth.
Matsuyama, for winning his first FedEx Cup playoff event, earned $3.6 million from the overall $20 million purse.
He now heads to the BMW Championship at Castle Pines in Colorado in third place, behind Scheffler and Schauffele.
As is the case though, the top 50 is as important as the winner as those inside that magic mark have qualified for all the signature events on the PGA Tour in 2025. Nick Dunlap entered the week 67th, but jumped up 17 spots and into the 48th position by finishing in a fifth-place tie with Sam Burns. Eric Cole moved up eight spots and ended 46th. On the other end of the spectrum Tom Kim moved from 43rd to 51st and Mackenzie Hughe dropped from 48th to 52nd. Their seasons are over.
Hovland is the defending FedEx Cup champion and was well down the rankings at 57th before the week started. But his 66-66 weekend now has him in a much better position to defend his title at 16th.
