US Stock Market Live: Nvidia eyes R&D facility in Shanghai
Nvidia is planning to set up a research and development centre in Shanghai as it looks to strengthen its presence in China’s growing artificial intelligence market, despite tighter U.S. export controls.
The move follows CEO Jensen Huang’s recent visit to China, where he met with top officials including Vice Premier He Lifeng and Shanghai’s mayor Gong Zheng. The centre will focus on understanding the needs of Chinese customers and contribute to global projects such as chip verification and product optimisation. Core chip design and production will remain outside China to protect intellectual property.
Nvidia is also recruiting AI talent in Shanghai, with local authorities reportedly offering incentives such as tax breaks and land support to facilitate the project.
China contributed around $17 billion to Nvidia’s revenue last year, representing about 13% of its total sales. Huang has said the Chinese AI market could grow to $50 billion within a few years and that losing access to this market would be a significant blow for the company.
