DOHA, Qatar (MNTV) – Qatar is advancing plans for a comprehensive national intellectual property strategy as part of broader efforts to support innovation, entrepreneurship and the transition toward a knowledge-based economy.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry held a high-level dialogue on Qatar’s national intellectual property strategy, bringing together government officials, legal experts, innovation specialists and representatives from key institutions.
The session also included academics from leading South Korean universities and stakeholders involved in intellectual property, technology and entrepreneurship development.
Speaking at the event, Assistant Undersecretary for Commercial Affairs Saleh Abdullah Al Mana said the proposed strategy is being designed to align with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the country’s Third National Development Strategy.
He noted that progress in digital transformation and digital inclusion has created favorable conditions for innovation and creativity, providing a foundation for a stronger intellectual property framework.
According to the ministry, the strategy is being developed in cooperation with domestic stakeholders and international partners and will draw on global best practices.
The framework is intended to support the full innovation cycle, from research and development to intellectual property protection, commercialization and the generation of economic value.
Officials also expect the initiative to strengthen Qatar’s standing in international innovation rankings and enhance its attractiveness as a destination for investment and technology development.
Omar Al Ansari, Secretary-General of the Qatar Research, Development and Innovation Council, said the strategy would help coordinate the country’s investments in research and innovation while creating greater opportunities for innovators, institutions and strategic partnerships.
Abdulbasit Taleb Al Ajji, Director of the Intellectual Property Rights Department at the ministry, said recommendations from the discussions would contribute to a strategy aimed at boosting Qatar’s competitiveness and supporting long-term economic diversification.
Participants examined the relationship between intellectual property and economic growth, reviewed experiences from Qatar and South Korea, and discussed ways to strengthen cooperation among stakeholders involved in innovation and technology development.
Discussions emphasized that intellectual property should be viewed not only as a legal safeguard but also as an economic asset capable of driving innovation, encouraging entrepreneurship, attracting investment and supporting sustainable development.
The session concluded with a review of opportunities to further strengthen Qatar’s intellectual property ecosystem, reinforcing the country’s ambition to establish itself as a regional center for innovation and knowledge-based industries.
