The Missouri Department of Natural Resources responded to a sinkhole that opened near Interstate 70 and The Dome in St. Louis, mobilizing assistance from its Missouri Geological Survey, according to a news release from the department.

The sinkhole is located at the end of an exit ramp off I-70, according to the release.

“We’re sending Fletcher Bone, an environmental program specialist with our Missouri Geological Survey, to assist the city in evaluating the sinkhole,” Missouri Department of Natural Resources Director Kurt Schaefer said in the release.

The department has identified approximately 16,000 sinkholes in Missouri, although many more exist that have not been reported or documented, according to the release.

The largest known sinkhole in Missouri encompasses approximately 700 acres in western Boone County, southeast of where I-70 crosses the Missouri River, according to the release.

Records of sinkhole depths are not kept, but the department knows that some are greater than 100 feet deep, according to the release.
